From Marathons to Ironmans, there is no stopping us at Mad Monkey!

Next on our agenda is the formidable Ironman 70.3 in Cebu, where Mad Monkey’s co-founders, Alex Darroch and Tom Edwards, are pushing their limits not just for athletic glory but for a heartfelt cause: supporting The Rabbit School in Cambodia. This school provides crucial education to over 670 children with intellectual disabilities, empowering them with brighter futures.

The Rabbit School, Phnom Penh

Over a decade ago, we started our journey with The Rabbit School by providing employment opportunities for their students in Phnom Penh, and we’ve been awed by their dedication and progress despite numerous challenges. Now, as Alex and Tom face the grueling Ironman challenge, they’re driven by a mission to raise $2,000 to help these incredible kids.

The power of a community

As we support our co-founders on their journey from the marathon tracks in Sihanoukville to the triathlon course in Cebu, we’re reminded of the power of community and the importance of our mission. Every stride and stroke brings us closer to supporting the dreams of children who face extraordinary challenges every day. Your support can light up their path toward education and integration, creating waves of change that reverberate throughout their lives and our community.

We’re all smiles here at Mad Monkey! Photo courtesy of Mad Monkey

Can you help us reach our goal?

Join us in this meaningful endeavour. Every contribution, big or small, can make a significant impact. Let’s support these children together and show the world the power of community and commitment in action.

Donate here and help us change lives for the better!

Why Should You Visit Cebu Province?

There are so many reasons to travel to Cebu province, and here are a few of them.

Rich Traditions And Culture

The people of Cebu give prominence to culture and tradition, which is a mix of foreign and local influences. Music, dance, furniture making, and architecture here show what changed when the Spaniards arrived.

The Philippines is known as the cradle of Christianity, and Cebu bears evidence of this by having some of the most spectacular churches in the country. Christianity was introduced five centuries back when the Spanish set foot here in 1521.

Cebu has annual festivals and various events to celebrate its rich culture and traditions. You can experience the extravagance of these festivals while visiting religious sites in Cebu.

You may also experience its impact on different religions and cultures by visiting the Taoist temple.

Bustling But Laid-Back Nature

Although Cebu City is the heart of the province with tall skyscrapers, it’s a place where you can enjoy a laid-back and calm lifestyle. In Cebu, you’re guaranteed a good night’s sleep even after a busy day exploring the streets and urban attractions.

There are places for food and drinks, entertainment, and fun activities scattered across the main region. Some of the popular locations that domestic and foreign visitors visit are the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and the casino.

You are also simply a boat ride away from enjoying outdoor activities like trekking, canyoneering, and watching whale sharks.

You can visit the oldest street in Cebu, which is named Colon Street. It’s the best example of Cebu being a bustling city but with a laid-back nature.

 Values And Customs

Cebu makes everyone feel at home, primarily due to its values and customs. Cebuanos strongly believe in religious and family bonds built upon these customs and values. They strongly stand up for the ability to empathize with others and the ability to display the spirit of unity.

Accessibility

Cebu is a business and transportation hub, so you can easily move around the region from one place to another. You can study, work, live, do business, and do many more things in the same place due to accessibility.

Wherever you go, you’ll see groups of Cebuanos gathered to enjoy and have a good time. You can stop by and ask anyone for directions or travel tips, and they will be more than happy to provide you with the same.

Cebuans love animals and pets too, so you can happily take your furry friends on your trips. However, ensure that they are well-trained before you take them out in public in Cebu.

If you have a dog, ensure it has completed training with one of the dog training services available in your area so that you know it’ll behave well and be obedient in public.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Cebu?

The period between July and October is ideal for visiting Cebu if you want to avoid the crowd, especially at popular tourist attractions.

It’s the low season because the region sees more rainfall during these months, so you can also land some excellent deals that provide great value for your money.

During this period, you get to visit Cebu at the cheapest price and without the impact of the warm climate, which is from January to April.

The peak season to visit Cebu is from January to April, when the weather is dry and less humid. It’s also a period when many regional events are held, like the  Santo Niño de Cebú Festival and the Sinulog Festival.

Hordes of tourists come to see these festivals that celebrate the history of the region with a dance parade.

Offsetting Your Carbon Footprint as a Traveller:

Getting Around Without Getting Down

Now, let’s talk about getting from A to B without costing the Earth . Overland travel is your friend here. There’s something about train journeys that makes you feel like you’re in an old-school travel flick, gazing out at landscapes morphing from cityscapes to countryside. And buses? They’re the unsung heroes of eco-friendly travel, plus, you meet the most interesting characters on long bus rides (I once shared a packet of biscuits with a monk on a bus to Laos!).

When flying is the only option, think of it like a cheat meal – keep it rare and make it count. Direct flights are the way to go, less faffing about in airports and kinder on the planet.

Direct flights are the way to go! Photo courtesy of Canva

Setting Up Shop Sustainably

Choosing where to drop your backpack and laptop is key. Cities like Copenhagen are a haven for nomads with a green conscience, cycling everywhere and munching on food that’s more local than the pub back home. And when it comes to your pad, go for spots that recycle like it’s going out of fashion, say no to plastic like it’s a dodgy street vendor, and maybe even have a herb garden out back.

Research shows that hostels are more eco-friendly than hotels. By sharing a dorm room with a bunch of travellers you’re not only in for a more sociable trip, but a more ecological one. At Mad Monkey our war on waste is relentless, from slashing single-use plastics across our hostels to rolling out biodegradable packaging. We’re committed to advocating for a future where our only legacy is the memories we create, not the marks we leave.

Mad Monkey Siquijor, Philippines — 12 Bed Dorm

Living Like a Local

This is my favorite part. Diving headfirst into local life not only gives you the best stories but also cuts down on your carbon shenanigans. Ride a bike, eat street food (the rule is, if there’s a queue, it’s good), and buy trinkets from the guy who made them, not a souvenir shop. Your experiences will be richer and your carbon footprint smaller.

Gili T Bucket List Bike Tour with Mad Monkey! Come join us!

The Nomad Network

Never underestimate the power of a good old chinwag with fellow nomads. Share tips, swap eco-friendly finds, and maybe even team up for some local clean-up action. It’s all about that community spirit.

Tech to the Rescue

Now, we’re in our element. Use that smartphone for more than just selfies and Google Maps. Track your carbon footprint, find the nearest bike-sharing station, and always, always go for e-tickets. Less paper, less hassle.

Quit heading to the airport with stacks of paper and boarding passes, do it all on your phone!

The Offset Odyssey

Here’s where it gets a bit science-y but stick with me. Carbon offsetting is like giving the Earth a spa day after you’ve thrown a rager in your hotel room. It’s about investing in projects that suck up all that carbon you’ve been trailing around. The trick is to pick a project that’s legit – think wind farms over “magic beans”.

The Carbon Offset Adventure: A Step-by-Step Guide

Imagine you’ve just wrapped up a whirlwind tour, hopping from the neon lights of Tokyo to the serene beaches of the Philippines. Now, it’s time to balance the books with Mother Nature. Here’s how you can do your bit to keep the planet groovy:

Step 1: The Numbers Game

First up, in our journey of offsetting your Carbon Footprint as a traveller, we need to figure out how much carbon your adventures have added to the atmosphere. It’s like checking your bank balance, but for your carbon account. There are loads of carbon footprint calculators online that can do the heavy lifting for you. Just plug in your travel details, and voilà, you’ll get a number that represents your carbon output in tonnes of CO2e (that’s carbon dioxide equivalent for the uninitiated).

Step 2: Picking Your Eco-Battles

Now that you know your carbon debt, it’s time to decide where you want to make a difference. Think of it like choosing a charity to donate to, but instead, you’re investing in planet-saving projects. There’s a smorgasbord of options out there – from reforestation efforts in the Amazon to wind farms in Morocco. Some providers even let you spread your love across multiple projects, so you don’t have to put all your green eggs in one basket.

Step 3: Seal the Deal

With your project(s) picked, it’s time to cough up the green – and I’m not talking about lettuce. Purchasing your offset credits is the final step. It’s like buying a guilt-free pass for your travels. Your chosen provider will take your contribution and funnel it into the projects you’ve selected, giving you a pat on the back for doing your part in the eco-revolution.

The Wrap-Up: Offsetting Carbon Footprint as a Traveller

Alright, let’s bring it home. Being a digital nomad doesn’t mean you have to leave a Godzilla-sized footprint on the planet. It’s about making those small, smart choices that add up. Travel slow, live local, and keep it green. The planet will thank you, and hey, your adventures might just get even more epic.

So there you have it, a no-BS guide to keeping your nomadic life as green as that avocado toast you had for breakfast. Now, go forth and roam responsibly!

We aren’t your typical party hostel — we want to show you an epic time by immersing you in the local culture and connecting you to the communities you’re exploring. Our socially responsible hostel has projects in Asia that directly supports the locals — building water wells, creating education funds, providing fair employment for our team, and so on — which we’ve found is the best way to effect change. Your stay with us contributes to these efforts.

Our story begins with three backpackers — Steve, Tom, and Alex — who came to Cambodia in 2010. They quickly fell in love with the country and its people, however, the good times they were having in Phnom Penh were contrasted by the poverty that they came face-to-face with each day. Wanting to do something to give back, they had the idea to create substantial, sustainable, and positive change in the country to help other travelers experience its wonder. People thought they were mad, dubbing them the “Mad Monkeys”.

And thus, Mad Monkey was born and has quickly expanded since. Starting in 2011 as a single hostel in Phnom Penh, travelers were drawn to the vibrant atmosphere and social responsibility at the core of the company. Today, Mad Monkey is one of the largest hostel companies in Asia, serving over 350,000 guests per year in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. We continue to rapidly grow as more hostels, property owners, and partners adopt Mad Monkey’s way of delivering a truly amazing customer experience with a social purpose.
