Everything You Need to Know About

Mad Monkey Hostels

How It All Began

Today, Mad Monkey Hostels is the largest hostel provider for backpackers in Southeast Asia. Between our 7 (and counting!) hostels throughout Southeast Asia, we have 700 guests stay with us every night – that’s over 255,500 guests every year. It’s pretty amazing and humbling, especially when you consider where we started out. The story starts with 3 guys: Alex, Tom, and Steve.

Steve worked in Digital Media and came to Asia on a business trip; Alex was a plumber in the UK before he came to Cambodia backpacking; and Tom was working in a bank in London before he set off to backpack across Asia. Phnom Penh, Cambodia was supposed to be a quick stop on the itinerary for each of them – but that’s not quite how it turned out.

Each of the guys was taken by the charm of Cambodia and the Cambodian people, and found themselves extending their stays. Steve, for his part, had never been in a hostel before – and he was blown away by the great vibes at Phnom Penh’s legendary Top Banana Guesthouse. The good times they were having as they settled into the country, though, were contrasted by the poverty that they came face to face with every day.

One particular interaction with a mother begging for drug money whilst sedating the baby on her hip shook Steve to the core. He knew then that he needed to stay in Cambodia. He wanted to create substantial and sustainable positive change in the country, and to help other travelers to experience its wonder as he had. These have been our goals since Day 1, and we’ve brought them together in our Mad Monkey Purpose: Mad Monkey exists to provide the best possible customer experience in the most sustainable way, for the benefit of our guests, our Mad Monkey family, and our local communities.

Steve set out to create a hostel in Cambodia that would have an awesome atmosphere and contribute to the community around it. He quickly realized, however, that a few heads would be better than one. He, Alex, and Tom were all introduced through mutual friends. Alex and Tom listened to Steve’s vision of a socially responsible hostel, and knew it was the perfect opportunity to realize their own desires to give back. They were in.

Word began to spread about this idea of theirs. A lot of people thought they were crazy at the time, and some Khmer friends started to call Steve a ‘Mad Monkey.’ To which he replied: “Cheers, now the hostel has a name.” Against the odds, Mad Monkey Phnom Penh opened its doors in 2011. In the following years Mad Monkey would expand across Cambodia into Mad Monkey Siem Reap, Mad Monkey Kampot, and Mad Monkey Koh Rong Samloem. Next came the Philippines in 2016 with Mad Monkey Boracay, and then Mad Monkey Nacpan a year later. In 2017 our team also branched out into backpacking in Thailand with Mad Monkey Bangkok.

Now here we are, running all these hostels and loving every minute of it. Every day we get to meet interesting backpackers from around the world, show them a great time in these amazing countries, give back to our local communities, and have more fun than we ever thought was possible in our jobs back home.

Of course, that’s just the story in brief. Alex, Tom, and Steve didn’t build Mad Monkey on their own. We’d be nowhere without our amazing staff, the guests that are the heart and soul of each hostel, and the management team that has come together to drive Mad Monkey towards its full potential. Learn more about that team here, and find out how you can join it here. If you’d like to know more about what makes Mad Monkey a socially responsible business, check out our work in the community. Or better yet, come visit us at one of our amazing hostel resorts and see for yourself!

Mad Monkey Hostels in Cambodia

By committing to a socially responsible business model, providing excellent customer service, and offering the most social atmosphere in Cambodia, Mad Monkey has quickly positioned itself as one Cambodia’s best backpacker hostel brands. We operate the best party hostels in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Kampot, plus a beautiful backpacker resort on the Cambodian island of Koh Rong Samloem, because we are truly passionate about our customers getting the very best Cambodian experience possible.

We put customer service and the quality of each and every guest’s experience at the forefront of our thinking. We have a huge range of Cambodian tours and activities available. Whatever you want to do in Cambodia, we can make it happen, from the obligatory tourist destinations (trips to Angkor Wat, The Killing Fields, and The Royal Palace) to more “off of the beaten track” experiences (like jungle treks, fun group days out, and adventure tours of Cambodia’s hidden treasures). In fact, between all of our hostels in Cambodia we offer over 100 tours and activities for you to experience the country to the fullest. Beyond that, every night in our bars we run 28 different events and parties where you can meet people and make memories in the Kingdom of Wonder.

Mad Monkey Hostels are a cut above the rest, because we care about the details. The halls and walls of each of our hostels are covered with creations by artists that have passed through and donated their original artwork to our space. Besides being living art installations, our hostels are decked out with high quality facilities and unparalleled social vibes.

Every hostel in Cambodia that we operate provides great local and international food from our in-hostel restaurants, excellent party nights and events, and countless other opportunities to meet fellow backpackers during your stay.  Our hostels with a swimming pool include our Phnom Penh Hostel, Siem Reap Hostel, & Kampot Hostel. Our Koh Rong Samloem Hostel doesn’t have a pool, but that’s only because we’ve done you one better – while you’re there you have access to your own private beach with crystal clear water for swimming. Welcome to the good life.

Mad Monkey hostels have a wide range of clean rooms with comfortable beds. Our variety of dorm room and private room booking choices make us a suitable place to stay for flashpackers, backpackers, and groups seeking a friendly vibe and to meet other travelers.

As a testament to all of the above our hostels have been lucky enough to be awarded multiple global awards from Hostelworld,, and TripAdvisor. Among these we have 2 prestigious “Hoscars” from Hostelworld and multiple TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence. We have also been featured as one of the best places to stay in Cambodia in prestigious travel blogs and magazines including Cosmopolitan, Lonely Planet, Backpacker Guides, and Rough Guides.

If you are backpacking around Asia, taking a gap year, or even on a shorter-term holiday in Cambodia we promise that if you stay with us we’ll help fill your travels with fun memories and great experiences.

By choosing Mad Monkey as your best place to stay in Cambodia you are also supporting socially responsible travel. Since 2011 we have been at the forefront of championing socially responsible tourism in Cambodia and are delighted that most of our industry is starting to follow our lead. Your stay at Mad Monkey contributes to clean water projects, education projects, projects for children with special needs, and most importantly a fair employment deal for all of our team working in Cambodia.  You can find out how we are a socially responsible hostel here.

With all of this considered we are not the cheapest place to stay in Cambodia, but if you are working with a tight budget for Cambodia accommodation don’t worry – you’ll still find our rooms and dorms to be low cost, inexpensive and great value for money. Staying with us leaves you more cash to spend on amazing tours and experiences, and with local businesses.

As a hostel we are strongly committed to our guests’ safety. Whilst of course no environment is 100% safe (slipping in the shower causes more injuries than you would think), we do provide an environment that has security cameras, security guards, and fire safety measures in place. It’s unfortunate that it still has to be considered in this day and age, but we do take great care to provide the best hostel for single female travelers. We offer female only-dorms and specially train our security team and bar staff to be on the lookout for threats to the safety of our female guests.

For group travel in Cambodia we offer packages designed for tour groups that deliver excellent group accommodation options at the best price possible. We can help you and your group with travel plans, visa processing, and bus/boat/taxi journeys throughout the county.

We hope you’re convinced that Mad Monkey hostels are awesome! Rather than just taking our word for it, though, we’d encourage you to come stay with us and see for yourself what makes us the best hostels in Cambodia. Our hostels are very busy, though – we’re 95% full on average year round. It’s really key that you book ahead online to avoid disappointment, because we’d hate not to get to meet you and show you a great time in Cambodia.
