Angkor Wat Hot Air Balloon Experience in Siem Reap
Flying in a hot air balloon over Angkor Wat in Cambodia is a unforgettable experience leaving you with memories that you will treasure for the rest of your life. The panoramic views of the mountains, temples and surrounding areas are breathtaking.
The Cambodian hot air balloon experience is reasonably priced, but the joy and thrill of a balloon ride are beyond belief. You will be overwhelmed at the beautiful scenery while flying over the ancient temples, ruins and historical sites of the country. The site is located on Sivatha Road in Sangkat Svay Dangkum in the province of Siem Reap. The Angkor Wat Hot Air Balloon Experience in Siem Reap is available at The Mad Monkey tours desk within the hostel.
There are two balloon companies in the Siem Reap area. One of these companies offers a balloon ride that remains tied to a rope, which only goes up and down with a simple view of Angkor Wat. The other one is bookable through most agents and is a real adventure! It costs about $125 per person, and while the flyers are very professional, this trip begins in a cow field and randomly stops everywhere! This can be a lot of fun. Spending forty minutes up in the air, ten of which were hovering very close to trees and villages, with all the local children following us on their bicycles! All jokes aside, they very conveniently pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. The balloon was brand new, this was only its second flight, and the pilot and navigation systems were well able to compare with modern flying standards!
You fly over the areas just outside of Siem Reap, but not over any of the temples. Apparently the government does not allow the air balloon to fly over the temples and view from above. There is not very much to see, but it was still an enjoyable ride, although quite boring and certainly not worth the price. You can arrange for either the sunrise or sunset ascent. Bookings can be done at the night market and cost $125 per person for a forty minute flight or $15 per person for ten minutes on the tethered balloon flight. You may find this trip exciting if you have never been in an air balloon before, but the basket is very small, uncomfortable and hot. The flyers are very friendly and this makes a difference. Try to ensure that you have clear skies before you take this flight. If you do not like discomfort, you should choose the shorter trip.
The Cambodia hot air balloon ride is conducted twice daily during sunset and sundown in the province of Siem Reap. For your information, take off time is at 6:10 until 6:40 in the morning and 5:00 until 5:30 in the afternoon. However, the takeoff time could be adjusted depending on the time of sunrise and sunset. The average duration of flight is about 40 minutes and cancellation of flights will be announced when the weather is bad. You can reschedule your flight or you may opt for a refund.
Also included in the service are pick up and drop off from The Mad Monkey Hostel in Siem Reap in an air-conditioned car/van. The English speaking tour guide will be there for you to acquaint you with the ins and outs of hot air balloon. You will also be provided with a clean towel and cold water for drinking. The kongming lantern-shaped hot air balloon is maneuvered by licensed pilots. Each balloon is equipped with safety and flight equipment to assure you of safe flights.
For those of you that may be a little nervous about flying but still want to see Angkor Wat from a balloon there is also a tethered balloon available that will allow you to go up for about 15 minutes to take your photographs before descending again safely down to earth.
