CUSTOMS & ETIQUETTE

  • People don’t typically shake hands when they meet, instead they offer a “nop” — a slight bow of the head with their palms together
  • Remove your shoes before entering homes (and even in some restaurants and shops)
  • Do not touch a monk (especially if you’re a woman)
  • Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon

Where is Mad Monkey Luang Prabang?

Sitting on the south side of this UNESCO World Heritage, Mad Monkey is just 5 kilometers and 15 minutes from the Luang Prabang International Airport.

 

How to get to Mad Monkey Luang Prabang

A private taxi to Mad Monkey should cost around 60,000 LAK or $6.75 USD per car (this can be split between multiple people). To get transport, go to the taxi stand inside the terminal building after you exit the baggage claim area of the airport.

The bus station is about 1.5 kilometers from Mad Monkey and will take around 20 minutes on foot. You can also get a tuk tuk, which should cost around 30,000 LAK.

I stayed in Mad Monkey for 3 nights and had an amazing time. Both the reps Simon and Youssef were really welcoming and helpful and made the evening activities really fun. Would highly recommend if you want a social hostel that isn’t too over the top!

Great dorms/facilities, super friendly staff, an overall great hub to get good western food, tour buses, motorbike rental, and to socialise in Luang Prabang. Had a great time there, and shame I left so soon.A few things to note and pick on, food portions are a bit far on the small side, be prepared for roosters to wake you up at 6am unless you’re a very heavy sleeper, and super expensive if you don’t book in advance and they’re down to the last few beds.4.5/5 stars :)

Had a great couple of days here. Dangerous because the beer is cheap and the food is good. Didn't actually end up seeing any of Luang Prabang other than Mad Monkey and the ATM. The reps "Bodega" Dave and Alex were also excellent and far less annoying than the majority of reps. Clean, comfortable, and welcoming.

Awesome hostel. Alex and jack really know how to make you feel at home. Great social atmosphere and comfy beds. They just need to get curtains for the beds or blinds for the window because the outside light is on all night. Would and will stay here again!

We had a great time at Mad Monkey Luang Prabang! The town is a world heritage site, so everything closes down at 11pm until 7pm, including the public areas at the hostel, but we actually really loved this. We had lots of partying early and then we’re actually able to sleep without a ton of noise and disruption. Super comfy beds, the hostel is brand new so everything is clean and sparkly, great pool and people. Jack was AMAZING and made our stay so much fun! Thank you!
